Planet Waves "Trio" or "Drop Tune" Partial Capo (Black)
Store/Capos
Product Details

Now called "Drop-Tune" capo. This was designed to clamp 5 outer strings, though it does a pretty good job of just clamping the outer 4 strings on many guitars without slipping off or string buzzing, and it is an attractive and well-made capo. There are a number of musically valuable things that require capoing either the top or bottom 4 strings, and the guitar world needs more tools to do this job.

You can clamp any 4 strings with a universal partial capo (Third Hand or SpiderCapo), but you lose access to the notes next to and behind the capo. Because it does not do as well as the new Liberty FLIP Model 65 we no longer sell this Planet Waves model. The Liberty capo and its sister Model 43 will clamp 6, 5, 4 or 3 strings on a wider range of instruments than other partial capos.

The Planet Waves Trio (and the Liberty capos) also works well as a full capo on banjo, ukelele, bouzouki or mandolin. The Trio's threaded clamp mechanism allow you to get the clamping force just right to avoid buzzing and to stay in tune, and its low profile lets you easily reach over or around it if you need to.

It is a light-weight capo, and it is not just a "sawed-off" capo, since it has a slightly different shape and clamping angle than a full capo. It is made of aluminum and has a screw-clamp mechanism.

Until recently there was no easy way to clamp just 4 outer strings, since both the Shubb and Kyser 5-string "Dropped-E" capos either tilt so that the outer E string buzzes, or else they wiggle off in mid-song. (Even the shorter Shubb banjo capo doesn't work on most guitars.)

If you'd like to get your money's worth from this capo and find all the music it unlocks in your fingerboard, Harvey Reid's "Capo Voodoo- Book 2" shows 47 amazing ways to use this kind of shortened partial capo. This information is not obvious, does not come with the capo, and is not available anywhere else on earth. The 127 pages are packed with over 1300 chords, lots of photos, diagrams, with tips, strategy and ideas to make your head spin.

The Planet Waves full capo (which we also can sell so you have a matched set) also comes in a silver color, but the Trio is only available in black. (See the matched pair in our photo gallery on this page.) If you don't already own a "Dropped-E" (5-string partial) capo like the Shubb c8b or the Kyser Drop D capo, this one will do everything those will, plus more, and is a very welcome new partial capo tool. MADE IN CHINA.
